IBM, Notre Dame Launch Lab to Focus on Tech Ethics

(WallStreetJournal) The University of Notre Dame and International Business Machines Corp. this week launched an applied ethics lab to research and promote the ethical application of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
The lab is funded by a 10-year, $20 million investment from IBM. It will be located at Notre Dame in Indiana and will be led by two co-directors who have yet to be named. Officials said the lab will comprise dozens of researchers, faculty members and students.
The lab will explore issues such as bias in the creation and application of facial recognition systems and who should have access to quantum computers powerful enough to break encryption codes. It also plans to offer an ethics curriculum for Notre Dame students.
