(TelecomPaper) Latvian state-owned re-transmission operator LVRTC has signed a cooperation memorandum with the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Latvia (LU MII). The parties plan to cooperate in R&D of quantum data transmission.
LU MII started quantum technology research in 2019, establishing cooperation with the Swiss-US-China-South Korean joint venture ID Quantique and installing the QKD research platform CLAVIS 3. The LU MII has just started a large research project in the field of quantum cryptography.
LVRTC is interested in identifying and exploring the potential of quantum data transmission and other functionalities. It is expected that during the cooperation, using the LVRTC broadband fibre-optic network outside Riga and the capacity of LVRTC’s newest and most powerful data centre, a 50 km quantum data transmission network pilot site will be created.
The parties plan to test Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology on the pilot network within a month.
