The Taiwanese government in March 2022 selected a total of 17 teams led by professors from Taiwan’s top-rank universities and recruited 72 project directors and 24 IT companies to participate in its quantum tech program.
Via the program, the Taiwanese government is seeking researchers to develop technologies that help break through the bottlenecks experienced by existing quantum hardware and software. The team will also work on finding the best quantum technology direction for Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and create a paradigm shift in the industry.
The promotion group consists of several Taiwanese top-notch quantum computing talent such as Felix Gwo, director and distinguished research fellow at Research Center for Applied Sciences, Academia Sinica; Wen-Hao Chang, distinguished research fellow at Research Center for Applied Sciences, Academia Sinica; and Ming-Jye Wang, research fellow of Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy & Astrophysics.
The teams will conduct their quantum research based on the technologies used in chip manufacturing, IC design, and packaging technology and will prioritize their investments in solid quantum technologies, which are performed on semiconductors, superconductors, and other solid materials.
The 17 teams will push into four major development directions – quantum components, quantum computers, quantum algorithms, and quantum communication. Since quantum computers are able to process data much more efficient than present computers, developing a new programming language, compilers, and applications tools that fully utilize quantum computers’ capability has become necessary.
