(Engineering&Technology) As part of the £400m UK National Quantum Technologies Programme, four research hubs developing different quantum-based technologies were established in 2015. In addition to the Quantum Communications Hub, led by Oxford University, which the Cambridge quantum communications network is part of, there are hubs for Quantum Sensors and Metrology (led by the University of Birmingham), Quantum Enhanced Imaging (led by the University of Glasgow) and Quantum Information Technologies. The latter is building a quantum computer demonstrator, led by Cambridge University.
As part of the programme, mainly funded through the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, Innovate UK is supporting four projects focused on developing prototypes of marketable quantum devices: QKD, novel types of quantum clocks, and quantum gravity sensors.
